First, I want to recomend a book from Giovanni Sartori. The book is Democrazia: Cosa é ; a book where anyone can learn a lot about Democracy, the oldes Democracys, the new waves of political theory and many things more.
Then, I want to explain that the perfect Democracy that we have in mind when we think in the clasic Grecee is not a REAL Democracy, or it is not a Democracy following our nowaday concept of it.
For this explanation, we have to think in a Democracy in a Polis, and without Government. That's it, the oldest Democracy was buildt in a Polis and the Goverment ( burocracy ) didn't exist. Every one in the Polis were Citizane and Politician. More than that, the good Citizane was a good Politician, and the Citizane that did not care of the Polis was an idion ( a idiot, a fool, a useless Citizane).
This was posible because ( As Aristoteles explains) charges were very short in time and a Citizane couldn't be in a magistracy for more than one time ( Aristoteles- Politics).
Then the life for a Citizane was subornidate completly to the Polis, and the private life was a second issue. Evenmore, there were not private rights protected as nowadays. The freedom was more a right to vote and to participate in public life of the Polis.; a colective power, so there were not any INDIVIDUAL RIGHT, base of our nowadays Democracy.
So this "Democracy" was not a Democracy with freedom. Polis were buildt by the estructure of Citizanes, who were the Politicians and the Citizanes that have the rights, and slaves.
They wouldn't understand a Democracy where the single Citizane has the rights and not the comunity. For them, we are slaves in this Democracy.
Another fact is important, Polis were citys of a very low number of Citizanes, so a Democracy like that is only posible with low population. Athenas, grow up until 30,000 or 35,000 Citizanes; a Democracy like that wouldn't be able in our moderns Cities of millions of Citizanes.
So Greek Democracy was not a real Democracy. Is our Democracy a Real one? Is something I will explain in the future. I only have to tell you that Greek Democracy is an imposible and wrong Democracy nowadays; something that sometimes is ignored.
They had not private life, have we freedom? Not for them, and for our, them neither... Has Democracy existed?
Maybe human is a politic animal in a Polis ( As Aristoteles suggested) that can be free, or if human is an animal slave? Is freedom a dream, a false ideal? I think that we cannot be free in a Society, almost if human race do not change.
Therefore we are slaves in the city, slaves in public, slaves in the society. What is left then? I only can thin in one possibilty: To be free in our minds. Fight for be free almost in our mind, in our private sphere, and fight for more freedoom ( a freedoom that will never appear) in our public sphere.

Does Democracy work?
Vietnam-War

Iraq-War
Both started by the biggest Democracy that nowadays exists.
Israel-Palestine conflict.
Israel is being suported by technology and millions of dollars each year by EEUU.
Death
Misery
Destruction
All in name of Democracy, progress, segurity.
Does Democracy work?
Obama, a hope for many, is just a man in a corrupt Democracy wich uses Presidents as puppets many times. Will Obama change much? Only Irak's situation? Can anyone change Israel's situation if Jew is one of the most powerful comunity in EEUU who controls Banks and the Cinema Industry?
What is left if Democracy does not work?
What can work?
